Wreck Diving in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is a small coastal town located about 35 km north of Playa del Carmen.  It is home to one of the best wreck dives in the area.  The C56 Juan Escutia,  was originally a US Navy Minesweeper named USS KNAVE that served during World War II.  She was decommissioned in 1946 and put  in reserve, and reclassified as MSF-256.

In 1960 she was sold to the Mexican Navy and renamed ARM DM-13.  In 1994 she was again renamed as ARM Juan Escutia (C56) and sank in 2000 as part of the artificial reefs program.

She now sits intact on a sandy bottom at 90 feet/30 meters. A mooring line is attached to the bow, and gun turrets are still attached and can be seen at a depth of 70 feet/24 meters.  Although now she only shoots bubbles.

This trip is combined with another reef dive in Puerto Morelos.
